Join us for a candidate open house July 26

Post Date:July 19, 2023 2:26 p.m.

Local elections for the offices of council member at large A, council member at large B and mayor will take place Nov. 7. If you’re thinking about running for city office this year, or if you’re volunteering on a campaign, join us for a candidate open house to meet city leaders and get answers to any questions you may have. The open house will be held Wednesday, July 26 from 6 – 7:30 p.m. in the St. Louis Park City Hall Council Chambers, 5005 Minnetonka Blvd. Light refreshments will be provided.

Staff from several city departments and the elections office will be there to answer questions from potential candidates. Elections staff can help explain the official steps you need to take to get on a ballot and provide kits to candidates who file for local office. The kits include educational material on the ranked-choice voting system and forms needed to administer a campaign. They don’t include any promotional material. Please note that the role of the city clerk’s office and the elections team is to connect candidates with resources to help navigate the technical aspects and requirements of becoming a candidate and the overall administration of elections. City staff can't interpret laws for candidates or provide advice related to campaigns.

On the ballot this year are the office of at large council member and mayor. Both of these offices represent the entire city on the city council, unlike ward council members. Potential candidates can live anywhere in St. Louis Park and will be elected using ranked-choice voting by all eligible voters in the city. There are two at large council members, who serve separately as the A and B members. The mayor, in addition to serving on the council as a voting member, also performs ceremonial and official duties on behalf of the city. Members of these offices serve four-year terms and were last elected in 2019.

Filing for these offices begins on Aug. 1 and ends Aug. 15.
