What is a sanitary sewer lift station?

A sanitary lift station is a facility used in wastewater systems to move sewage from lower elevations to higher ones when gravity flow alone isn’t possible.

By keeping wastewater moving, lift stations help prevent sewer backups into homes, businesses and streets, which protects public health and reduces costly emergency repairs.

Without lift stations, cities would need deeper excavation or more complex pipe networks—both expensive and disruptive. Lift stations allow communities to design sewer systems more economically.
