What are estimated meter readings?
Utility billing uses an estimated meter reading when they are unable to access the actual meter due to various reasons such as inaccessible location, faulty meter or other obstacles. Utility billing will estimate usage based on previous usage for the same billing period. The estimated readings are used until an actual meter reading is obtained.
While this method provides a temporary solution, it may not always accurately reflect your actual usage. The next actual meter reading is critical for correcting any discrepancies that may have occurred and ensuring the customer is billed accurately in the subsequent cycle.
The estimated readings can lead to discrepancies in your energy bills, potentially causing overcharges or undercharges. It is important to ensure your meter is accessible to avoid estimated readings and maintain accurate billing.
What are estimated meter fees?
If we are unable to access the actual meter reading and have to use an estimated reading, utility billing will issue written notice(s) requesting that the property owner schedule an appointment for service. If a water meter is not repaired or replaced within 30 days of written notification:
- A fee of $100 per month will be added to the utility bill to cover the cost of estimated water and sewer usage.
- Estimated billing will continue until the meter is repaired or replaced and accurate usage can be recorded.
- Continued noncompliance may result in interruption of water service in accordance with utility regulations.
To avoid additional charges or potential service disruption, property owners should promptly schedule required meter repairs or replacement upon notification.

How to ensure accuracy with regular meter reads
To ensure accuracy, it’s important to make your meter accessible to the meter reader. This means keeping the area around your meter clear and ensuring it is not obstructed. An accessible meter allows the meter reader to take accurate readings, which in turn ensures your bill reflects your actual usage.
Additionally, regularly checking your own meter can help you monitor your water usage and identify any potential issues. If you notice any problems with your meter, such as a faulty display or a meter that isn’t registering correctly, contact the utilities department immediately at 952.924.2562, extension 1. They can address the issue and ensure your meter is functioning properly.
By taking these steps, you can help ensure the accuracy of your meter reads and avoid any discrepancies in your energy bill. Regular meter readings, whether by a meter reader or by checking your own meter, play a crucial role in maintaining accurate billing and managing your energy consumption effectively.
