Latino Heritage Month

The city council passed a proclamation this month observing Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 as Latino Heritage Month.

Latino Heritage Month is a time to recognize the significant contributions of Latino communities to United States history and culture. This month-long celebration began in 1988 and encompasses a span of dates when several Latin American countries celebrate their Independence Day. This year's 2026 theme, “Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together,” celebrates the leaders, innovators and changemakers whose impact continues to inspire future generations. St. Louis Park is home, workplace and a place of gathering for many Latino communities. We take this time to recognize the diverse Latino heritage and contributions to our city and state.

To celebrate Latino Heritage Month, the City of St. Louis Park invites you to:]

Proclamation

The proclamation reads:

Whereas, this year’s Latino Heritage Month theme is, “Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together”; theme that celebrates Latino culture and history across Latin America and its diaspora with diverse languages, dialects, customs and history; and

Whereas, this month spans the independence days of several Latino nations including Mexico, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Chile and Belize; and

Whereas, according to U.S. Census data, there are over seventy million Latinos in the United States representing 21% of the population, 7% of Minnesotans and 6% of our neighbors here in St. Louis Park; and

Whereas, as local pioneers of change, Latino entrepreneurs, educators, healthcare providers, philanthropists, and community and political leaders have helped create a more just and inclusive St. Louis Park for all; and

Whereas, St. Louis Park stands united against discrimination and seeks to overcome barriers that restrict language access, criminalize communities or create fear for immigrant families, affirming our strategic priority to remain a safe, welcoming community where every resident is treated with dignity, fairness, and respect; and

Whereas, St. Louis Park honors and celebrates the history, achievements, contributions, and diversity of the Latino community. We recognize the need to foster and build relationships between all communities to shape our shared future together,

Now therefore let it be known that the mayor and city council of the City of St. Louis Park, Minnesota, hereby observe September 15 to October 15, 2026, as Latino Heritage Month in our community.
