Garbage and Recycling

St. Louis Park provides curbside collection of garbage, recycling, organics and yard waste for single-family residential properties, which includes multiplex housing with two to four units (five to eight-unit buildings have the option to opt-in). Yard waste collection is seasonal.

Note: If there are any updates or changes to solid waste collection services, they will be noted in the tab below the options to pay your utility bill.

Pumpkin disposal

Are your Jack-O-Lanterns starting to droop? Have the squirrels feasted on your pumpkins? Don't put your pumpkins in the trash! Pumpkins can be composted as long as they aren't painted and all candles, wax and decorations are removed.

Dispose of pumpkins and gourds in one of three ways to give them a new life as compost:

  • At the free Pitch-a-Pumpkin event Oct. 31 – Nov. 5 at The Rec Center. A special container for pumpkin and gourd collection only will be available in the southeast corner of the Rec Center parking lot.
  • With yard waste on your regular collection day. Place your pumpkin in your reusable yard waste container or a paper yard waste bag. Reminder, each container or bag must be under 40 pounds for collection.
  • In your brown-lidded organics cart. Place your pumpkin in a BPI-certified compostable bag or paper grocery bag in your organics cart.

Note: pumpkins are not accepted in the multifamily organics drop-sites because they will overfill the carts. Please bring them to the Pitch-a-Pumpkin event noted above.

Visit the organics page for more information on how you can reduce waste and participate in the organics program.

Brush drop-off site

Beginning Nov. 1, the brush drop-off site will no longer be open on Tuesdays. Drop off your brush on Saturdays 7 a.m.– 3 p.m. or Sundays noon – 4 p.m. through Nov. 29.

Yard waste collection

The last week for yard waste collection is the week of Nov. 23 – 28. If there is a significant snowfall before then, yard waste collection will end at that time. If this occurs, updates will be posted on this page and the city's yard waste page.

Remember, yard waste must be in your own reusable containers, certified compostable bags or bundled separate from garbage. Each bag, bundle or container should weigh no more than 40 pounds. It must be set out by 7 a.m. to ensure collection, especially during peak season.

Note: Crews will not be collecting yard waste, garbage, organics or recycling on Thursday, Nov. 26 due to the Thanksgiving Day holiday. Collection for Thursday and Friday households will be delayed by one day.

Cart set out requirements

Setting out carts

If you have curbside collection, place carts on your driveway or on the boulevard between the street and sidewalk. Ensure carts have at least 2 feet of space between them and surrounding objects, including other carts, vehicles, trees and overhead branches. This helps drivers provide safe and efficient collection while using automated trucks to empty your carts.

If you have alley collection, place carts on your property, driveway or beside your garage next to the alley. The 2-foot spacing noted above for curbside collection is not required for alleys.

During winter months, keep the area where you place your carts for collection clear of snow. This helps crews safely access your carts. Carts set on top of snowbanks or buried in snow will not be collected. Don't place carts in the streets, alleys or sidewalks at any time of year because they get in the way of the traveling public, street sweeping operations and block snow removal. This is a year-round requirement.

Storing your carts after collection

Put carts away promptly after collection. If you must store your carts outdoors, please be considerate. The city requires that carts stored outside are behind the building line adjacent to the street and are at least 4 feet from property lines shared with a neighbor. Carts are also allowed to be stored in the alley right of way immediately next to your garage provided the cart does not extend into the alley itself. Keep in mind that any property damage that occurs during snow removal in the alley due to items stored in the right of way is your responsibility.

If you have questions related to cart storage, contact public works at operations@stlouisparkmn.gov or 952.924.2562.
